My appreciation of these qualities inspired this design.

This bench combines ten components. Yet, instead of looking complex, the design suggests wholeness and simplicity.

Straight Timber Bench
http://www.sonorous.ca/wp-content/plugins/slideshow-gallery/vendors/timthumb.php?src=wp-content/uploads/slideshow-gallery/gallery_MAIN_5.jpg&w=900&h=400&q=100&a=tThe deep, fluid contours of the grain and the rich patina of salvaged timber are highlighted by the contrasting smooth geometric precision of the polished concrete. Both materials are beautiful in their own ways, and they set each other off well.

Romanesque Bench
http://www.sonorous.ca/wp-content/plugins/slideshow-gallery/vendors/timthumb.php?src=wp-content/uploads/slideshow-gallery/gallery_MAIN_6.jpg&w=900&h=400&q=100&a=tSome 3X10 larch floor joists taken from a derelict hops barn find new life in a bench that would be well at home in a cavernous mead hall or wine cellar. This design is somehow reminiscent of a primitive throne.

Column Base: Copper Inlay

Concrete can be formed and treated to create solid-looking bases that enhance the style of most buildings.

Column Base: Chiseled Recess
http://www.sonorous.ca/wp-content/plugins/slideshow-gallery/vendors/timthumb.php?src=wp-content/uploads/slideshow-gallery/chiseled_base.jpg&w=900&h=400&q=100&a=tQuite different looks can be achieved without drastically altering a design. This chiseled column base is of the exact same basic design as the base with the copper inlay.

Inlay Sample: Copper
http://www.sonorous.ca/wp-content/plugins/slideshow-gallery/vendors/timthumb.php?src=wp-content/uploads/slideshow-gallery/gallery_MAIN_3.jpg&w=900&h=400&q=100&a=tThis is a scale model of a rectangular plinth whose purpose is primarily aesthetic. However, the Chinese character for tranquility also invites cultural and intellectual responses in the viewer, which broadens and deepens its impact.

Relief casting

Icefall
http://www.sonorous.ca/wp-content/plugins/slideshow-gallery/vendors/timthumb.php?src=wp-content/uploads/slideshow-gallery/Icefall.jpg&w=900&h=400&q=100&a=tThis started as an attempt to create a dramatic looking bollard. But the creative process and the materials conspired to form something like an abstract version of a mountain.

Tapered Plinth
