  The simple lines and massive components typical of ancient art and architecture create an intriguing mixture of beauty, mystery, and a sense of authority. My appreciation of these qualities inspired this design.

  

• Asian Bench

  Asian design often features tight and stylish integration of many parts. This bench combines ten components. Yet, instead of looking complex, the design suggests wholeness and simplicity.

  

• Straight Timber Bench

  The deep, fluid contours of the grain and the rich patina of salvaged timber are highlighted by the contrasting smooth geometric precision of the polished concrete. Both materials are beautiful in their own ways, and they set each other off well.

  

• Romanesque Bench

  Some 3X10 larch floor joists taken from a derelict hops barn find new life in a bench that would be well at home in a cavernous mead hall or wine cellar. This design is somehow reminiscent of a primitive throne.

  

• Column Base: Copper Inlay

  Column bases often look bulky and contrived. Concrete can be formed and treated to create solid-looking bases that enhance the style of most buildings.

  

• Column Base: Chiseled Recess

  Quite different looks can be achieved without drastically altering a design. This chiseled column base is of the exact same basic design as the base with the copper inlay.

  

• Inlay Sample: Copper

  This is a scale model of a rectangular plinth whose purpose is primarily aesthetic. However, the Chinese character for tranquility also invites cultural and intellectual responses in the viewer, which broadens and deepens its impact.

  

• Relief casting

  The relief casting of the “tranquility” character in brown concrete creates a more natural and rustic effect than the same character rendered in copper and embossed on grey.

  

• Font

  Although this piece could be used as a fountain or a reflecting pool it seems more suited to holding ceremonial water, like a baptismal font.

• Icefall

  This started as an attempt to create a dramatic looking bollard. But the creative process and the materials conspired to form something like an abstract version of a mountain.

  

• Tapered Plinth

  The function of this could have been purely aesthetic, but the iron ring also makes it a useful place to tether an animal.
